Albrail, part of Motus Holdings, was established in 2016 with the aim of revitalizing key sections of Albania’s rail infrastructure. The company is currently the only private concessionaire focused on rehabilitating neglected lines, creating new connections, and strengthening parts of the national network to ensure efficient and sustainable transport. By combining innovation, technical expertise, and strategic partnerships, Albrail is transforming key segments of Albania’s railway network into modern, reliable corridors capable of supporting both freight and passenger transport.
Today, Albrail is particularly focused on freight services, with a strong emphasis on crude oil transport. Volumes are growing steadily to meet strategic demand, and rail transport offers significant advantages over road: reduced traffic, lower emissions, improved safety, and greater efficiency over long distances. It has also significantly reduced transportation costs and replaced approximately 15,000 truck journeys annually in the touristic Fier–Vlora region, easing congestion and improving safety. Furthermore, rail remains the only reliable solution for transporting very large volumes of goods quickly and without incidents. These benefits make rail an essential part of Albania’s energy logistics and a sustainable alternative for heavy transport.
Albrail’s work has already delivered tangible economic and logistical benefits. Key projects include the rehabilitation of the Fier–Vlora railway line and the construction of a loading station for railway cisterns at the Fier refinery. For the first time, these developments enabled crude oil transport from Fier to the Petrolifera Italo-Albanese terminal in Vlora. This advancement strengthens industrial logistics, supports Albania’s energy sector, and boosts local economies by improving market access and encouraging business growth. These upgrades prove rail is a cost-effective and dependable alternative to road freight, with major logistical and environmental advantages.
The company operates a fleet of three CKD locomotives and 33 tank cars, designed to carry heavy freight safely and efficiently. Infrastructure upgrades, including modern loading facilities and rehabilitated stations, ensure reliable operations while preparing the network for future expansion. Looking ahead, Albrail aims to become Albania’s leading rail freight and passenger carrier, fostering intermodal connections between rail, road, and port networks and integrating Albania’s system with European rail networks.
